NAT disappointed by amendment to Children, Schools and Families Bill
A new Government amendment to the Children, Schools and Families Bill threatens to undermine progress in reducing HIV amongst young gay men. This comes after more than 100 MPs signed NAT’s Early Day Motion saying they are concerned that young gay men receive appropriate information about HIV.
Deborah Jack, Chief Executive of NAT, comments:
We are really disappointed that the Government has introduced an amendment which dilutes the principles of compulsory Sex and Relationships Education for all. This amendment could allow faith schools to support negative teaching about homosexuality. Young gay men are the group of young people most at risk of getting HIV. New HIV diagnoses amongst this group have doubled in the past decade. We owe it to the next generation of young gay men to equip them with the knowledge to protect themselves and others from HIV.
