People who are in held in prison and other detention settings, including immigration removal centres (IRCs), are entitled to the same range and quality of healthcare service as the NHS provides to the general public. Despite this, detained people living with HIV experience unique challenges due to their limited ability to reach local clinics and the insufficient support from IRC staff.

National AIDS Trust, with BHIVA and Public Health England Directorate of Health and Justice, surveyed Immigration Removal Centres (IRC) and their local HIV clinics about the treatment and care of detained people living with HIV in 2011-12.
