Beyond the Action Plan: A Cross-Governmental Approach for Achieving our Goals on HIV is calling on every Government department to play its part in ending new HIV transmissions by 2030.
Every government department has a part to play, from housing and welfare, immigration, education, employment and justice. This call to action sets out the recommendations that departments should take to tackle the social determinants of HIV and turn the Government’s ambition into delivery.
While the HIV Action Plan has driven important progress, healthcare interventions alone cannot achieve the Government’s ambition of ending new HIV transmissions by 2030. The report recommends action across a range of policy areas, including housing, disability benefits, healthcare in prisons, local welfare provision, and efforts to reduce health inequalities.
The question is no longer whether England has the tools to end new HIV transmissions. It does. The question is whether Government is prepared to tackle the policies that still stand in people’s way.
Ending new HIV transmissions by 2030 could become a defining legacy for this Government. But it will only happen if every department acts now.
