Matthew Weait is Professor of Law and Society at the University of Oxford. An internationally recognised authority on the intersection of law, public health, and human rights, his research focuses on the legal and social implications of HIV criminalisation, a topic on which he has published widely. In addition to his academic work, Matthew has advised UNAIDS, WHO (Europe) and National AIDS Trust, was a member of the Department of Health’s Expert Advisory Group on AIDS (EAGA) and THT’s legal services group, established a free law clinic for people living with HIV at River House in London, served as a Technical Advisor to the Global Commission on HIV and the Law, and was lead for political sciences, law, ethics, policies and human rights at the International AIDS Conference 2022. A Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society for Public Health, and a Bencher of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, Professor Weait continues to contribute to international efforts aimed at reforming laws that hinder effective HIV prevention, treatment and care.
