NAT launches ‘HIV: an Agenda for Action’ with Parliamentary Reception

HIV has for too long been a neglected issue in the UK and real improvements still need to made in HIV prevention, care and rights. The ‘Agenda for Action’ sets out what the key aims should be to address HIV effectively in the UK. NAT is inviting everyone – including MPs, Peers, journalists and individuals – to sign up and pledge to ‘act’ on this Agenda, do everything they can to help meet the aims and so make a real difference.
The ‘Agenda for Action’ aims –

To ensure that there is a national strategic approach across the UK to tackling HIV
To reduce rates of HIV transmission through effective prevention
To significantly reduce the number of people with HIV who are diagnosed late
To address the current failings in treatment, care and support for people living with HIV
To make rights, equality and respect a reality people living with HIV
To deliver effective commissioning of HIV that addresses local need
Deborah Jack, Chief Executive of NAT, says:

‘Whilst HIV is certainly a global health challenge, it must not be forgotten that the UK itself has an HIV epidemic. By the end of 2011 there will be 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK. NAT has published this ‘Agenda for Action’ because more can and should be done to address HIV. And with a new Government, we particularly want to bring HIV to the attention of our politicians and decision-makers as an issue which demands political action.’
