Robbie Currie, Chief Executive, National AIDS Trust said:

“National AIDS Trust is really pleased to see this decision by NICE to approve cabotegravir.

“PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) medication has been proven to be an absolute game-changer in preventing new cases of HIV for thousands of people. A simple injection six times a year can take us to the next stage in the fight against the epidemic and achieving the goal of ending new HIV transmissions in the UK by 2030.

“While oral PrEP has been effective for many people, for others it is not practical or accessible – this could be for a range of reasons, for example because of their housing situation or other circumstances which makes it difficult or unsafe to have that medication easily available.

“That’s why having the availability of an injection of PrEP on the NHS as soon as possible is so important to get closer to ending new HIV transmissions for everyone, not just for some.”
